Less Stress
more action

improving interpersonal dynamics in activism and justice spaces

Why are we like this?

we all want the same thing, right?

a dense crowd of protesters fill a city street with raised fists

protest and community are POWERFUL.  and we know it.

…but we’re still different PEOPLE

Our differences can be useful, or they can lead to resentment, distrust, and internal conflict instead of the action we need.

Different Schedules

Some of us work hard, in bursts, but if we don’t take breaks we burn out.  Others of us work steady on, a little at a time until even a long slog is done.

Emotional Thresholds

How much fierceness is too much? Some folks thrive in a high emotional pitch; others get overwhelmed or shut down.

Different Values

We all want justice, but some of us like fast action and spontenaety to get there; others of us make tiny changes over time.

Gut or Data

There’s a lot to be said for “I have a bad feeling about this” but sometimes you just gotta see the data.  Is it study or stalling?  Is it instinct or is it reckless?  How do we know when we think differently about how to make choices?

Different Strokes for Different Folks

All of us need to hear that we’re doing a good job…but we praise differently.  Some of us holler and jump up and down; some of us say a few quiet but meaningful words.

Direct or Indirect?

For some people, the only way to say what you mean is to SAY IT

For others, anything but a delicate approach gets their defenses up.

we need everyone

…and everyone’s needs should get met. All the time.  Leadership, members, everyone.

This means you need to know what your needs are.  Having some compassion for other people’s needs doesn’t hurt, either.  But figuring out how to predict and work with everyone’s needs at once is COMPLICATED.

The line between disdain and appreciation is surprisingly thin. Frustration can give rise to contempt pretty easily in the heat of the moment.

And activism has a lot of heated moments.

Justice work matters.  There are other reasons why we are often under more external stress, but what we can do together is create spaces that honor ourselves and our values, both alone and together, so we can work together, so we can make our communities and our world a better place.
